Thanks, Matthew! I'm heading over to Sam's today to try one of their veganized menu items. I've had Daiya cheese and it melts really well and tastes great. It's probably my favorite vegan cheese so far, but FYH does the trick in a pinch since it melts well, but it's hurl-worthy raw.

Thanks for the info, Matthew! I'm updating the post to reflect that fact and that Taphouse is using an alternative to Chickette and still calling it Chickette. More good news!

Thanks for posting about hampton roads' latest vegan updates! I really love this blog, and hopefully more eateries and establishments within the seven cities will realize that offering veg*n and raw alternatives are a great way to attract a larger audience.

Well the people from Sam's were just here (I work at Organic Food Depot on Granby) and they had run out of Daiya. They bought a large quantity of Follow Your Heart Cheddar and Mozzarella. They mentioned wanting to purchase bulk quantities in the future. They also mentioned that Daiya either did not melt well or did not grate well, but according to what Ive heard it does both. They also commented that it smells like "stinky feet" but that people seem to like it. My boss thinks it's too expensive.
I should also mention as I did to the Sam's people that the Manager of Red Dog gets his vegan cheese from here. He usually buys up all the Follow Your Heart Mozzarella and Monterey Jack as well as the Mozzarella slices from Tofutti and Galaxy Nutritional Foods. The guy from Machissmo gets vegan sour cream (tofutti brand) and follow your heart cheddar from here. Greg Peterman (Yorgo's) also gets stuff from here, which I only mention to let everyone know he uses Organic Tofu and Tempeh.

PS - When I was looking at Norfolk Public Schools a couple of weeks ago, they were so desperate for teachers of math and science that you only needed a BA or BS in any subject and no teaching certificate or experience was required so I would imagine that they would be super-excited to have a real teacher apply!

I love La Bella but I have to say that I am vegetarian not vegan. I would just be very, very careful that they understand what you say. I have a nut allergy and they are not always certain or forthcoming about nut contaminants on their desserts. That being said, if in fact they have something vegan on the menu, I am sure it will be delicious. Their food really is quite yummy!

Thanks for the info. I've been living in this area for 6 1/2 years and only recently discovered some of the vegan-friendly restaurants nearby.
